More specifically, could a hybrid taxation system be more successful? The government would never concede in certain areas, like the military and several social programs, but the rest of that tax money and its distribution is very hard to track for anyone who doesn’t have extensive experience. Hell, even those who have proposed bills seem to have trouble keeping track of where it’s going.
So what if we had some sort of base taxation rate, not necessarily a flat rate, but an easily understood rate which is responsible for providing funding, or at least a portion of the funding, for programs that are deemed “necessary beyond public opinion” (written with the military in mind, but I’m sure there’s plenty of stuff that would fall under this category, and this is the area that would largely maintain the politics of the current system).
But anything that does not fall under this umbrella can be chosen with varying contributions. That is, another separate tax rate that takes a specified percentage which is distributed in chunks. For instance, each taxpayer could be given 10 “points” to put into different areas (infrastructure, education, renewable energies etc), with a maximum limit of 3 points for a single area, a mandatory investment in X amount of areas (say 1 point minimum in 5 areas, for example) as well as a collective saturation limit. (Think 2-2-2-2-2-0-0-0-0-0, 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1, 3-3-2-1-1-0-0-0-0-0). Each of these points represent 10% of your total tax contribution. Say there’s a billion points distributed to the population, a collective limit of 250 million could be set for any individual area, that way programs whose importance is not as clearly understood are not completely choked from funding, but those which are popular will receive more funding. The points determine the share of total tax dollars to be committed to each area. If one area maxes out at 250 million points, then 25% of the tax dollars collected by this portion of the system are committed.
Obviously this is an incredibly rough draft, so I’m not looking for answers that disprove the idea on the basis that it’s not entirely refined or vetted. I was just looking for answers on why something somewhat similar to this general idea would be beneficial or detrimental to the economy and/or resource allocation.
Personally, I think we would see a big spike in areas like education. Many people believe in better education even if their political party does not, and being able to make a measurable contribution regardless of the governments goals for the “mandatory” taxes seems as though it would make the public more comfortable with taxation in general. With the system now, there’s generally a mindset of “alright, I made 100 thousand dollars, which means I get to keep X amount” and not much thought is given to where the rest ends up.

2022.01.17 16:22 aegiskey (23M) Episodic Abdominal Pain, Need Advice on Testing

I am 23M, 5'10", 170lb, white, I used to drink occasionally (2 standard drinks every other weekend), do not smoke or do any drugs. I am dealing with random episodes of intense abdominal pain, changes in bowel patterns, occasional mild constipation/diarrhea, abdominal bloating, ongoing sensitivity to pressure across the abdomen, ongoing abdominal discomfort, and feelings of discomfort and/or fullness in stomach after eating. Episodes of pain occurred during early teens (11-16) and had not occurred since then until age 22. Episodes of pain can come after the ingestion of mildly spicy food (red pepper flakes on pizza). Family history of IBS, second-order family history of Crohn's (Aunt on Father's side has it).
This previous November I had a mild sore throat, and after a single beer had the worst abdominal pain ever. Doctor tested for strep, covid, H. Pylori, did many blood and urine tests. After 5 days of pain so bad I could not get out of bed, strep test came back positive but all other tests were normal. Abx did not alleviate symptoms, pain continued for another 7 days. Visited ER when pain became particularly bad, no emergency conditions found, was given fluids and IV pepsid which did not seem to help; ER Dr prescribed prilosec, I only did half a course because it seemed to make things worse. Pain went away, but the aforementioned abdominal symptoms (first paragraph) remained. Next episode occurred day before GI clinic, so I know the episodes can still occur.
My PCP ordered a CT Abdomen and Pelvis scan with IV contrast, it came back completely fine. Currently working with a GI PA, who ordered an Upper GI with double contrast x-ray and small bowel follow through; the test came back completely fine. The PA suspected Crohn's disease, so said that if the x-ray came back with nothing a colonoscopy is next.
My GI PA now wants to do a bacterial overgrowth test next, not a colonoscopy. I'm confused though, as from what I understand SIBO is definitely a possibility but it wouldn't explain the abdominal pain. That is, my understanding is that Crohn's and/or the Abx from treating the strep could have caused SIBO, but I'm not convinced that would be my primary medical condition. I'm not sure SIBO would match with strep causing a 2 wks long abdominal pain episode; which if this is something like a Crohn's flare-up, strep could very well cause that. Would it be reasonable to request more aggressive testing? Am I missing something?

Just wondering, did anyone else preorder the Left Hand Path repress from Earache that was listed almost a YEAR AGO now and still don’t have it in hand or are getting their emails ignored by Phil? i preordered this february of last year, and it was taken off the website shortly after, and i was told it was because they were delayed until summer, which made sense to me. well, summer comes around, and after another email, i learn they’re now delayed until december. months later, it’s december, and after yet another email, i’m told they’re still expected to ship that month. it is now mid january and my past 5 emails regarding the record have been ignored with no update whatsoever. this along with the record being completely taken off their site, is starting to make me believe Earache scammed me for the first time out of the 20+ purchases i’ve made of them. anyone else have any similar experiences or recommendations on what to do?
